This article explores the effectiveness of using situational tasks in biology lessons to enhance
students' functional literacy. Functional literacy refers to the ability to apply acquired knowledge in
real-life situations, make informed decisions, and solve problems effectively. The integration of
situational tasks in biology promotes critical thinking, increases students’ interest in the subject, and
facilitates real-world connections. The article analyzes various types of situational tasks, their
application in the classroom, and provides examples created by the author based on biology
textbooks for grades 7-9. It also discusses the teacher's role in fostering functional literacy and
outlines important considerations when designing such tasks. Methodological recommendations are
offered to help educators connect biological content with students’ everyday experiences and
encourage cognitive engagement.
