This article examines the impact of natural disasters on the development of ecological tourism in
Almaty, one of the leading tourist regions of Kazakhstan. With the rapid growth of tourism in
mountainous areas, the importance of ensuring tourist safety and the sustainable use of natural
resources is significantly increasing. The aim of this study is to analyze the natural risks characteristic
of the Ile Alatau region and assess their impact on infrastructure and recreational facilities.
The methodological basis of the study relies on the analysis of scientific literature and statistical
data. Data on mudflows, snow avalanches, and floods for the period from 1966 to 2015 were
examined, and patterns of their spatial and temporal distribution were identified. It was found that the
most hazardous processes significantly affecting tourism include mudflows, snow avalanches, floods,
landslides, and rockfalls. The most vulnerable areas are the basins of the Kishi Almaty, Ulken Almaty,
Talgar, Kargaly, and Aksai rivers. It has been shown that an increase in tourist flow in these areas
raises the likelihood of emergency situations and increases the pressure on the natural environment.
The study substantiates the need for an integrated natural risk management approach, including
monitoring, forecasting, and the implementation of modern information and communication warning
systems. The importance of developing safe tourist routes and increasing tourists’ awareness is
emphasized. The practical significance of the research lies in developing risk assessment and safety
recommendations, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of ecotourism in the
mountainous regions of Kazakhstan. The results of the study demonstrate that natural hazards have a
direct impact on tourism activities, and their prior assessment and management are key conditions for
the safe development of ecotourism.
